technology convergence
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20/03/15

Issues of technology: British films

YouTube -
I Max -               Forms of streaming
The web -
Synergy (technology):- synchronised energy, products or technology working together to have a bigger impact.

Proliferation
-To proliferate= to grow or spread. For example the spread of technology as its become cheaper, or the spreading of knowledge such as viral marketing.

Convergence -To converge= to merge/ link together. For example of technological convergence could be an Iphone or xbox, allows media to be consumed in a variety of ways.

How do I consume films...

2015:
  • DVD
  • Online streaming
  • Netflix
  • Super Chillin
  • Computer
  • Phone (SamSung)
  • Television
  • Ipad
2010:
  • Portable DVD player
  • VHS
  • Computer
  • DVD
CGI/ CG: Computer generated (images)

CGI: product benefits
  • Create locations that can not be filmed in (E.G. space)
  • Creating characters (E.G. The Hunger Games, replacing dead actors & HP troll, spiders dobby)
  • motion capture can be used with in this field
  • Props
  • Special FX (Explosions, stunts, spells (Harry potter))
Cons: CGI is a really expensive and time consuming process

Motion capture acting (E.G. Andy Cirkis)

How can the internet be used by film companies to enhance the success of their film?
  • Social media: Advertising ( Teasers, trailers, online profiles, merchandise, viral distributions, website)
  • A game online
What could the film industry do to combat illegal film downloads?
- 3D: using 3D to make films makes files hard to copy and distribute.
- Fact: campaign group
- File released to audience on many multiple platforms at the same time (E.G. DVD, streaming, cinema & BlueRay.)

Technology issue are helping directors to make a film
  • Digital video instead of film
  • Access to digital video (E.G. phone)
  • Storage is cheap (SD cards)
  • Apps to help with convergence technologies (DSLR> phone> social media)
  • Editing software ( non- linea editing)
  • I movie, final cut pro, sony vegas & premiere pro etc.
Technology Pros & cons
  • Production
Advantages:
-  CGI: special FX editing, creating characters and locations
-  motion capture: games and movies
Disadvantages:
-  Expensive
-  Time consuming
  • Distribution
Advantages:
-  viral marketing: teaser trailers
-  online profiles
-  website: Dark knight:- movements/ events
Disadvantages:
-  too much of a hype (violence) no guarantee on merchandise being sold.
  • Exhibition
Advantages:
-  conglomerates owning exhibition companies
-  help advertisement (Film festivals)
- connexions
Disadvantages:
-  expensive to submit films to film festivals.

Idea's of a block buster film...
  •  Big budget
  • well known stars/ cast
  • Amazing props
  • Special FX
  • Studio Picture
  • Good costumes
  • Beautiful locations
  • high Production Value
  • High concept (Idea behind it)
. Has a box-office of more than 1 million in production
.  Largely successful financially
. Has a large global appeal attracts a mass audience
. often releases in summer
. Contains a major star and/ or one part of a franchise
. high production values

- A movie which is a huge financial success is a Blockbuster. In common usage "Blockbuster" is a movie that has a box office of more than $100 million upon release in north America alone. It has a great global appeal and attracts a mass audience.

- Often has a summer release (as 40% of the years taking for big production companies are concentrated into this period due to summer holidays)

- Possibly Contains a major star, or is a part of a franchise, or is a remake or an adaptation of a book, comic, TV show or computer game.

- High production values, with costly settings, props etc.

USP: Unique selling point.

Avengers Assemble Essay:

Prior to the Avengers many films from the marvel franchise had been released such as; Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, as well as a the well know comic/ film characters Hulk, Black widow that appeared in one of the Iron man films and Hawk eye in Thor. All the marvel characters from the franchises (Iron Man, Thor and Captain america) had been very successful in the box office and had previously been in comics and/ or had merchandise sold by the millions.

At the end of the first Hulk film Tony Stark (Iron Man) appeared and mentioned the assemble of a group happening, as well as Nick Fury appearing in some of the franchise films which both created a 'hype' for the Avengers Assemble happening.

Lego has made many toys based of the Avengers both for the assemble and their individual marvel films and characters, this creates promotion for the films and as they are well known they would sell. Disney Joined together Pre-existing property to create The Avengers.

what is cross media convergence?
new technology is moving towards single platforms delivering multiple media outputs that can be used to reach audiences (E.G. Xbox can be used for gaming and watching films)
What is synergy?

synergy is the creation of a whole that is greater than the simple sum of it's parts...
the interaction or cooperation of two or more organisations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.

- Example of synergy is The Avengers Assemble franchise.

what is oligopoly?

a state of limited competition, in which a market is shared by a small number of producers or sellers.

what synergy looks like...
›Product Placement Companies pay to feature their product in a film, which often leads to a deal in which the film’s protagonist or other characters are featured in their advertising campaigns.

›Tie-ins / Promotional Partnerships, where the film or its characters will feature on existing products. This may be in the form of competitions.
›Spin-Offs. Products based on the original, i.e. the Film. A film may be a spin-off of a television series, ora television series may be created as a spin-off of a film. We can also think of this as media convergence.
›Pre-Existing Property. If a film is based on pre-existing material (for example a video game, novel or comic book)the pre-existing material is often re-released featuring imagery from the film on its cover, or a special edition is released in synch with the film’s scheduled cinematic release.

›Merchandise Companies create products specifically for the film, for example toys, calendars, video games. These products not only help market the film, but the audience’s knowledge of the film brings their awareness to the merchandise.

›Vertical Integration When distribution and some forms of exhibition are kept in-house , meaning other subsidiaries of the conglomerate (who owns the production company) distribute the film and create DVD releases of it.

Piracy:

what is piracy and how is it committed?

Piracy is the term for the illegal activity of unauthorised use or reproduction of another's work, it violates the copyright act, for example, pirate films or online streaming.

Piracy occurs when you download, copy, fileshare, install, or distribute digitised material in the form of computer software programs and entertainment media without authorization from the owner/creator or in other words the rights.

Who are FACT and what does it stand for?

FACT or the federation against copyright theft are the UK's leading trade organisation established to protect and represent the interests of its members' intellectual property (IP).

Established in 1983, FACT works closely with statutory law enforcement agencies to combat all forms of piracy and members include global and UK film distributors, TV broadcasters and sport rights owners.

Who benefits and who loses from piracy?

The people who mainly benefit from piracy are the pirates' and the viewer of the pirated files, the reason being is that they get to view new released films on the internet for free at home and the pirates' gain money from the advertisements shown throughout the movie online. People within the media industry don't benefit from piracy as all the money that got put into production and filming doesn't get gained when the film is released as people would prefer to watch it at home, therefore get insufficient gross income.

what are the figures of the loses due to piracy?

Ownership:

what media ownership?

All 'media' whether it is film, music or a print is owned by a company, they hold the rights to the document.

The media is called intellectual material , intellectual material means the film its-self, the sound track, screen play etc. (and is subject to copy right).

- Finance: the people that finance the movie are the owners ( if you pay for it, you own it).

- Budget can affect the production
  • Equipment
  • Stars
  • Stunts
  • Props (cars & action props etc.)
  • Costumes
Films with big budgets:
  • Sci-Fi
  • Action
  • Thriller
  • CGI/ CG: computer animated image
  • Horror
(key words:- niche (very specific and small.), contemporary (happening now), high concept films)

Hierarchy of power: the people that have the power to shape the industry and what most audiences are watching ( sir's story about tom cruise, big companies)

There are a few companies with a lot of money and are lots of small companies with not a lot of money.

- Gross box office: before you take away tax and film budget.

%    =   Producer

^
%    =   Distribution
^
%    =   Exhibition-er
^           cinema
$1   =   Gross box office

- Production Budget

Above the line costs (Fixed costs E.G. stars)

Below the line costs (Varied costs E.G. production)
